ROLE STATEMENT FOR GROUP FITNESS INSTRUCTOR Plans, organizes, and implements group fitness classes for customers and City employees; performs other duties as required or assigned.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS The principal function of an employee in this class is to instruct group exercise programs and classes at the Harward Recreation Center.
Classes are taught on land in a studio setting.
The work is performed under the supervision and direction of the Group Fitness Coordinator, but considerable leeway is granted for the exercise of independent judgment and initiative.
The nature of the work performed requires that an employee in the class establish and maintain effective working relationships with the assigned coordinator, other city employees, community and neighborhood organizations, and the general public.
The principal duties of this class are performed in a health and fitness environment.

General knowledge of basic record-keeping practices.
SKILLS/ABILITIES Physical ability to instruct a 1 to 1 ½ hour-long fitness class.
Ability to plan and instruct safe, motivating, and effective group fitness classes.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions.
Ability to use initiative and independent judgment within established procedural guidelines.
General ability to understand and apply music phrasing.
Ability to apply integrity, ingenuity, inventiveness, and empathy in the performance of assigned tasks.

Certifications & Licenses: Nationally recognized Group Fitness or Aquatic Fitness Certification (or ability to complete within 6 months of hiring).
Specialty certifications are required for Zumba, Yoga, Cycle, and Pilates (others as deemed necessary by national organizations).
CPR/AED certified.
